How to apply to the IB Program

How to Apply & Earn the IB Diploma

Students entering 11th grade can apply to Franklin High School's IB Program. Earning the IB Diploma depends on completing specific assessments, not report card grades. Students are notified of results in July of their senior year.

Assessment of Student Work

  • Each of the six subjects is graded 1–7.
  • Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Extended Essay (EE) are graded A–E, with A being highest.
  • Grades include Internal Assessments (by FHS teachers) and External Assessments (by IB examiners worldwide).
  • Internal Assessments contribute 20–25% of subject marks.
  • Maximum subject points: 6 subjects × 7 points = 42 points.
  • TOK + EE can add 3 additional points for a maximum total of 45.
  • Minimum points to earn the Diploma: 24 (subject to additional conditions).
  • Incomplete work in EE, TOK, or CAS makes a candidate ineligible.

Predicted Grades

Teachers provide predicted grades based on student performance and IB standards. These predictions are used by the IBO when considering student performance. IB exam results are not part of Franklin High School report card grades.

Conditions for the Award of the Diploma

  • Numeric grades must be awarded in all six subjects.
  • All CAS requirements must be completed.
  • TOK and EE must have grades A–E, with at least D in each.
  • No grade 1 in any subject.
  • No more than two grade 2's.
  • No more than three grade 3's or below.
  • At least 12 points from Higher Level subjects.
  • At least 9 points from Standard Level subjects.

IB Course Certificate

Students who do not meet the Diploma requirements may receive an IB Course Certificate. This certificate shows grades earned in individual subjects, TOK, EE, and completion of CAS.
