SAT & ACT

The SAT logo features the word 'SAT' in white text against a blue background.  The ACT logo features the letters ACT in a dark blue font with a red accent.

  • The SAT and ACT are standardized tests widely used for college admissions. Four-year colleges often require applicants to submit their SAT or ACT score (some colleges do not).

Many schools also require SAT subject tests. Make sure you know if a university requires a "supplement," which is generally listed on the application's website. Because high school grading systems (and GPAs) can vary by school, a standardized test can provide a more objective metric for consideration. Including scores from the SAT or ACT exam in your student application can help show schools of interest that you are academically prepared for college-level work.

  • Short answer: most community colleges across the US do not. This includes the SAT and the ACT. Community colleges are usually open enrollment. That means as long as you have a high school diploma or a GED, you are eligible to apply. Their application process is also very simple.

  • While many colleges and universities have revised their testing requirements so as to accommodate students during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure you review each school's admissions criteria, as some schools still require an SAT/ACT score and/or SAT subject tests.

  • Khan Academy and College Board have teamed up to provide FREE SAT prep. Students can now link their College Board account to Khan Academy. This allows Khan Academy to use student PSAT scores to create personalized plans and areas of focus for each student.

Students have access to video tutorials, practice exercises, and full-length practice SAT tests. Preparing for the SAT helps students have better confidence on the testing material and also helps students practice their time management skills.

Studies show just 20 hours of practice in Khan Academy results in an average score gain of 115 points, nearly double the average score gain compared to students who don’t use Khan Academy. Newsroom

HOW TO LINK YOUR ACCOUNT:

Step 1: Visit satpractice. Students can create an account on Khan Academy or sign into an existing account that they have previously made. It is highly suggested that students use their Highline “g” email if they have not previously made an account.

Step 2: Select start practicing when prompted.  Click on Sign into Collegeboard.org. When prompted, agree to link your College Board and Khan Academy Accounts.

Step 3: Hit send to create your personalized practice plan.
